Take a moment to look at all of the forums that interest you. Post in a couple of threads and let people get to know you before you start too many of your own (unless you are a creator, people love new artists/writers around here.) And in general, relax and take everything at your own pace.
Barring that, throw yourself into the thickest, most insane current around (Chatterbox might be a good place to start) and see if you sink or swim. Basically, the same thing you would do in any forum. You will also notice that we have a really nice profile system. Give people a looksee and see what their interests are. Will help you over all in determining the tone of a particular poster and where you might fit.
