William Brown remembered to duck to protect his head as he entered into the small government office. Even in the twenty sixth century the government was notoriously cheap about office space, unless you were the top dog. Many of the buildings were built or renovated during the most recent population boom, when space was at a premium, and had not since been renovated. Thus the caseworkers had to shuffle about in small offices like this, even in child services.

He remembered the first time he had entered Alexandra’s office, over seventeen years ago, for the original foster child he had taken under his care. He was a bit heavier back then, the single lifestyle had him overindulging in everything. Since he was living off of his father’s wealth he had no job to worry about, and could spend the nights gallivanting around with his chums in pursuit of his next sexual conquest. That lifestyle was far behind him. He was much happier, starting the day he brought his first adopted child home for good. Many more had come under his care in the years between then and now, and his visits to his caseworker had ballooned from four a year to what seemed like once a week.

Alexandra waved him in. Her back was turned to him, a large hoop earring dangled on her ear pressed against the telephone, partially obscured by her graying hair that accented the dark ebony color of her skin. She was wearing a vibrant red dress that fit her larger frame well, and was a remarkable contrast to her skin tone. He closed the door before sitting down on the open office chair, the worn black plastic of the seat made it feel more comfortable, more worn in than the newer one, which was currently supporting Alex’s purse and coat.

“Sorry about that Will, I know our meeting was ten minutes ago,” Alexandra said, hanging up. “Just my husband, he wanted to know what I wanted for dinner.”

“How is Charles?” Will asked. He had only met her husband once, a long time ago, but felt like he knew him well from all of the stories she had shared throughout the years.
