Dr. Jackie & Ms. Hyde

Story by Sajukno

This story is a reinterpretation of the classic Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde story. I hope you guys enjoy it!

Jackie sighed and leaned back in her chair, her short blond hair ruffling past her ears. It had been a long day, too long for any ordinary person, but Jackie, luckily, was extraordinary. For the past 4 years, ever since she had graduated from medical school at the very young age of 21, Jackie had set out to pioneer the field of medicine by creating a cure for cancer. Her unconventional methods of ignoring all previous established research and instead foraging her own path had garnered nothing but contempt from most of the medical world. In fact, the only person who really believed in Jackie's work other than herself was her assistant, Tiffany. Today, though, if everything went as planned, Jackie would finally have her cure for cancer, and not a moment too soon. Jackie had been diagnosed with stomach cancer a year earlier, and while it still had not shown any large adverse effects, Jackie knew that this cure she was developing was the only solution.

"Is it ready yet?" Jackie called out to the other side of the laboratory.

"Ten more seconds!" Tiffany yelled back, anxiously watching a large, boxy machine as it beeped down the seconds, preparing the sample of the cure. When it finally reached zero, a small door opened and Tiffany reached inside, pulling out a small beaker full of a thick orange fluid. She cautiously and carefully brought it over to Jackie, who was now sitting straight up in her chair. Tiffany set the sample down on the table in front of Jackie, both their eyes wide in anticipation.

"This is is, Tiffany," Jackie said, feeding off of the electric tension that coursed through the lab. "I drink this, and then you place me in that scanner-" Jackie motioned over to a large contraption that resembled an MRI machine, which was in reality Jackie's first (and so far only) breakthrough medical success - a scanner that could detect cancerous cells with pinpoint accuracy and efficiency "-and we'll see if this crazy formula works."

"Are you sure you want to do this, Doctor?" Tiffany asked, her normally cheery voice laden with a hint of nervousness. "I-I mean we haven't tested it on anything before. What if it has...side effects?"

"Let me worry about side effects," Jackie said as she brought the beaker to her lips. "Now let's make history." With that, Jackie began to drink the fluid, which went down relatively easy and had no noticeable taste. Right as the liquid hit her stomach, however, she began to feel as if something was wrong.

"I...I...I think I made a-" Jackie stammered, dropping the beaker onto the floor, the fragile glass shattering on the linoleum tiles. Jackie slumped back in her chair, unconscious.

"Oh my god! Doctor? D-doctor?" Tiffany shouted, noticeably worried. She saw that Jackie was breathing and let out a sigh of relief, but was still more worried than she had e
